When I booted into windows 7, I was getting the "unable to identify network" error, and no network connectivity. I really liked the Windows 7 and want to use it instead of XP. When I boot up into Windows I can connect no problem to the internet. Have you tried doing a system restore to a point before the problem started? For manual installation, some PCs (e.g. have a peek here I've seen numerous different problems and solutions to wired internet not working in Ubuntu 14.04, but none of them seem to apply to this case.
Loading... It will NOT work if I restart from Windows into Ubuntu. I then shut down my pc and booted back into windows 8 and sure enough I am able to get internet connectivity when I am running windows 8. How to fix?

Still getting the same problem however. Main point: if a cable from modem to computer gets you online, you probably have something amiss on your wireless router rather than your computer (as BOTH OSs can't connect wirelessly).
