If you are using XP you can just run the Command Prompt. I tried lot of recovery tools including Total System Commander, but none of them is able to see my WD Elements 1042. Took it home and plugged it in and still nothing. Yes, I tried it in another Windows 7 machine and in Ubuntu but it didn't work. Also, have you enabled SMART in your BIOS to see what it says regarding the HDD's health. thanks a lot well i use a software called 'EaseUS Partition manager', makes life so much easier and is alot better than win 7s own disk manager. Thanks for the idea though.
